A Lifestyle of Forgiveness

Aug 2, 2026    Pastor Dennis

What does it truly mean to forgive? Not just once, not just seven times, but as a way of life? In Matthew 18, we are confronted with a parable that exposes something uncomfortable about human nature. We have been forgiven an unpayable debt, yet we so often refuse to release others from the comparatively small debts they owe us. This message digs into the tension between our longing for justice and God's call to extend grace. We explore why we hold grudges, how bitterness functions like a leash that keeps us bound, and why the act of letting go is not weakness but a profound act of the will. The spiritual insight here is striking: unforgiveness does not punish the offender, it imprisons us. When we choose to keep ringing the bell of past wrongs, we are the ones who suffer. The message calls us to examine whether we are living in what might be called a spiritual spite house, a life shaped more by resentment than by the freedom Christ has purchased for us.
